Research Excellence Framework (REF)

The REF (Research Excellence Framework) is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It replaced the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which was last conducted in 2008.

Jointly conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL). The REF  was managed by the REF team, based at HEFCE, on behalf of the four UK higher education funding bodies, and was overseen by the REF Steering Group, consisting of representatives of the four funding bodies.

Key facts are available via the REF website but in summary:

  • The research of 154 UK universities was assessed (including that of almost 90% of RRUKA member institutions across the Engineering units)
  • 1911 submissions were made including 52,061 academic staff, 191,150 research outputs, 6975 impact case studies

We will be working with our members in future to share their results but in the meantime why not find out more about the system and overall results:

We hope to continue supporting the development of the relationship between academia and industry in rail in the coming year and strongly encourage you to find out more about our members by viewing the latest edition of our Capability Statement (hard copies available upon request).
